Background checks

When the report is the problem

A background check can be out of date, wrong or still showing a case a court already cleared. You have a right to a copy and a right to dispute mistakes.

Companies that sell background reports gather court records from many places and sell what they have. They don't always remove a case when it's set aside, and sometimes they list one case twice or attach it to the wrong person.

If you've lost an offer or a lease over a report, we get the report itself, find what's wrong and put the court's order in front of the people who wrote it.

We can help with

  • A cleared case that still shows

  • The same case listed twice

  • Someone else's record on your report

  • Dates, charges or outcomes that are wrong

What we do about it

From a bad report to a corrected one

  1. 01

    Step 1: Get the report

We help you ask for a copy of what the screening company has on you, and for the one an employer or landlord used.

  2. 02

    Step 2: Mark what's wrong

Line by line: what's out of date, what's duplicated and what isn't yours.

  3. 03

    Step 3: Send the proof

Court orders, dismissals and your identity papers go to the company in a dispute they have to look at.

  4. 04

    Step 4: Check the result

We read the corrected report, and go back if the old entry is still there.

Reports

Questions about background reports

An employer turned me down because of a report. What now?

Ask the employer which company ran the check and for a copy of the report. Then call us. There are short windows for some of the steps, so sooner is better.

Can a landlord see a record that was cleared?

If the report still lists it, yes. Getting the report corrected is a separate step from getting the court's order, and we do both.

Do you handle credit reports?

No. We work with criminal and court record reports. We can point you to the right place for credit.

Got a report you want a second look at?

Send us the company's name and what it says. We'll tell you what's worth disputing.
